How to cutting out an image [photoshop only]

hullo there! well i was bored today so i thought i’d try my hand at teaching you guys how to do some simple photo manipulation in photoshop cs5. in this tutorial i’ll be showing you how to add a background to an image and some other things along the way. so yeah, that’s cool, allonsy! *edit: tutorial remade november 18th 2012

1) find the image you want it to use, open it in photoshop and resize/sharpen it how you please :) create a layer below the one with your image on it and put the color or texture you want as the background.

2) using the quick selection too while on the image layer, select your subject. you may have to alternate between selecting and deselecting (alt/option while clicking) different areas until you get something exact.

3) using the refine edge tool, adjust your smart radius, smooth, feather, contrast and shift edge until you get something that works. below are the settings i usually use (except not the smart radius, only use that if there’s hair!) hit “ok” and copy/paste your selection into a new layer.

4) add on any final touches such as psd’s or background dodads!
